The LifeStage™ Portfolios were inspired by the Life Cycle Portfolios that Burton Malkiel proposes in his 1999 version of The Random Walk Down Wall Street. In the book he supposes that Investors need investment strategies keyed to the stages in life. This is because people of different ages have a different capacity for risk: a 64 year old and a 34 year have differing capacities for risk when saving for retirement. The asset classes chosen for the portfolios are inspired by the Talmud (record of rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, customs and history). Which purport a 1/3 of an individuals wealth should be allocated with the following 3 categories: 1. Land 2. Merchandise (business) 3. Ready at hand- in liquid form. These categories are implemented by using an index for REITs for the Land, an index for Equities for the Merchandise, and 2 indexes for ready at hand (both participating in debt instruments).
